Intertidal sites

This page contains images of intertidal rocky shore sites along the Great Southern Reef. These images are provided for the purpose of the lab activities in Weeks 2 (and maybe 3).

Two sites

You will be working with images from two sites: Site A and Site B. Each site has 20 images, which are randomly selected from a larger set of images.

The advantage of sampling two sites is that you can assess whether your observations from one site can be generalised to another. This is a common approach in ecology, where we often sample multiple sites to understand patterns at a larger scale, and addresses representative sampling and pseudoreplication.

Important

You now get to decide how the story goes:

  • Are you sampling both sites as one?
  • Are you sampling just one of the two sites?
  • Are you sampling each site separately, but comparing them to each other?

Depending on what you decide, your model may need to be tweaked, and your observations may need to be reinterpreted or improved.

Assumptions and prior knowledge

  • Images are randomly selected and assumed to be independent.
  • Images are assumed to be representative of their respective site(s).

The next step is to define your sampling strategy, and decide how you will use the images to answer your question.
